Today’s Gospel is one of the most beautiful & profound moments in John’s Gospel. Jesus greets his Apostles, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I send you.” Then He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and the devout Jews who heard them speak were amazed.
Many of us have magnets on our refrigerators, the magnets stick to anything that has iron or steel in them. So, refrigerators are a perfect place to stick magnets because their doors have iron or steel in them. If you take a magnet & put it somewhere where there is no iron or steel, it will eventually lose its magnetic power. Magnets need to stay stuck on something.
We are like magnets, we need to be “stick” to the Lord, to “stick” to the Sacraments, to “stick” to Holy Mother Church so we may be one with the Lord. [Adopted from Sermons.com]
The Holy Spirit is like a magnet holding us inside God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This story, “Last prayers” may help us focus on discovering the Holy Spirit in our prayer life. Late morning is Amelia’s favorite time of the day. The Hospice volunteers have helped her get washed and dressed, she has finished her breakfast. The volunteers move Amelia to her sunroom where she is at peace.
The volunteers move Amelia to her sunroom where she is at peace. She fingers her rosary while looking at the photographs of her children, and grandchildren covering her table. These photographs are her real prayer beads as she prays for each one individually, for their needs and happiness. “Hold them all, O Lord, in Your hands …. Bless them as you have blessed my husband & me these many years.” [Adopted for Table Talk, Cycle C]
Amelia prays with the breath of the Holy Spirit, gently and softly. Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on His disciples. We receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism Confirmation and when we receive the Eucharist. We need to TRUST God, Who answers at the right time, in the right manner, in the best way.
This story may help us, “The shirt . . ..” It has been a couple of weeks since her husband’s funeral. The children have all returned to their homes; the legal paperwork required has been completed; she has started writing thank you notes. Now comes the tough job Cleaning out his closet, packing his suits and boxing his sweaters. As she moves through his things, she comes across his flannel shirt, the shirt he wore around the house on cold days; he even wore it the day before he went into the hospital. It still smells of him and so, she holds it close to her skin and feels his arms around her for a moment.
A scent can be a comforting and reassuring sense; scents can be the assurance that we are loved despite the absence, that a part of the missing beloved remains. It is the Spirit of God that makes us the Church.
In Hebrew, the word for “Spirit” is ruah, meaning “breath” or “wind.” It is the constant presence of the Holy Spirit. God’s “scent” embracing us. The Advocate giving life to our hearts and souls so we can do Christ’s work of reconciliation and peace. Helping us to realize God’s presence in everyone.
Today’s Feast Pentecost celebrates God’s invitation into the life of Father, Son & Holy Spirit. To be a disciple of the Risen One is to be attuned to the direction of God’s Spirit within us walking with us and guiding us to imitate Christ’s attitude of selfless service. [Adopted from, Connections - From Wearing God by Lauren F. Winner.]
For a few minutes, in silence, reflect on the place of prayer in your life and when you see a magnet on your refrigerator let it remind you that the Holy Spirit is with you.
May God Be Praised.
