Homily Offered at OLPH for Salesian Saturday
Here we are one week into the new calendar year and about five weeks into the new liturgical year. What has changed?
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died and been laid to rest. I believe his brilliant theological work will ultimately be his legacy and his gift to the Church and the world.
But War continues in Ukraine and in several other areas of the world, violence and crime seems to be ever present in our news, the economic outlook is rather bleak. With all that news we look to today’s readings for Hope. Fortunately, we find it.
Our 1st reading from 1 John 5 we are reminded to have confidence in God. We can ask for anything according to His Will and we will be heard and receive the answer that is best for us. The Wedding Feast at Cana is the only Wedding story presented in the Gospels. It reminds of Christ’s, God’s superabundant love.
The miracle at Cana, also, reminds us that the Gift of Eucharist, is the Gift of Jesus Himself. The Eucharist is beyond our wildest thoughts and dreams yet offered to us to nourish us in our journey here on earth. Remember in John’s Gospel the soldier pierced Jesus’ side then water and blood flowed from His wound. We are reminded to give Jesus our wounds when we receive the Eucharist, so He can heal them.
No matter what is happening around us or in us – Jesus walks with us on our journey. Today take some time to reflect of the miracle at Cana and the superabundant miracle of the Eucharist.
