Blog Post 11/05/2021 – Homily OLPH School Mass

Our Parish Mission Statement [the purpose of our parish] is “We Are a Stewardship Parish and a Eucharist Centered People.”  That statement guides each action we take as a parish.  Today in our Gospel Jesus relates a story about an unjust Steward.  In ancient times stewards were care takers of the master’s property – remember the parable about the talents.

One had 5, another 3 and another 1, they were supposed to use their talents for their master’s benefit – 2 did that, one didn’t.   In today’s Gospel the steward was probably cheating the other people who worked for the master.  When the master finds out about it, he called the steward to account for his actions.  And as you heard the steward tried to immediately rectify his cheating, not because he was wrong, but because he got caught.

Jesus calls us to be “Stewards of the Time, Talent & Treasure” He gives us while we are here on earth.  Like the Unjust Steward in today’s parable, one day we will be called to give an accounting before God for how we used our “Time, Talent & Treasure” to build God’s Kingdom.

Maybe this story can help us understand, A Puzzle of the World.

A man who had a little boy that he loved very much.  Every day after work the man would come home and play with his child.  The family’s financial situation changed & the father had to take a second job, not for luxuries, but for food, clothing, etc.

When he got home, his son came running to him and was ready to play, and the father said he couldn’t because of his other job, but on the weekend, they would play and have fun.

As he walked to work that evening it bothered him that his son might be getting the wrong message, a message that he wasn’t interested in him.

Just then he saw a sign in a toy store window “Puzzle of the Word” guaranteed to keep any child busy for hours, so he purchased the puzzle and gave it to his son.  He said he couldn't play just now, but he could work on the puzzle.  The Dad sat on the sofa to rest for a little before going to his second job, and about five minutes later his son woke him up, “Dad the puzzle is finished. Can we play now?"

Needless to say, the Dad was surprised, and asked where the puzzle was, his son showed him the puzzle of the world on the kitchen table, over 1,000 pieces, each in its place.

His Dad said, "That's amazing! How did you do that?"

His son said, "It was easy Dad, on the back of the was a picture of a man.”

The moral of the story is when the children are put together right the world will take care of itself.   That is the message of today’s Gospel, Jesus wants us to do what is right [Be good Stewards of our T, T & T] and God will take care of the rest.  St. Francis teaches us to “Be who you are & be that well.”  So, the question we must answer is who are we?

The Gospel tells us God made us, gave us Time, Talent & Treasure to build up THE KINGDOM.
