A deadly plague was spreading throughout the northeast regions of China. Within four months, 60,000 people died.  Sound familiar? Actually, the year was 1910. The Chinese government recruited one of the best trained physicians in Asia at the time, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh.  Dr. Wu had studied infectious diseases in England.

Dr. Wu performed a series of autopsies, and he discovered a bacterium similar to the one that had caused bubonic plague in the West.  He realized immediately that this disease was transmitted infected droplets humans sneezed and coughed into the air. Dr. Wu designed a face covering a simple mask that was inexpensive to produce.

 

Dr. Wu’s mask was met with skepticism…. but the Chinese authorities followed Dr. Wu’s advice about wearing the masks, and mandated that everyone wear a mask, they enforced stringent lockdowns and quarantined the sick.  Four months after Dr. Wu began his work, the plague ended.

 

Today is THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS and this Feast challenges us to think of things like facemasks as “crosses” and to take them up in the Spirit of Jesus.  We are challenged to offer up our hardships, discomforts, challenges, etc. to bring healing and peace to Good Friday brokenness. Jesus taught His disciples that real discipleship calls each person to put the needs of others ahead of their own and to carry the crosses that come upon us with humility and gratitude. 

Jesus carried His Cross for us, we should carry our crosses for Him, by offering our suffering to God and asking God tom to make good come for it.
