Homily Cycle C 7-07-19

Today the
Scripture readings ask us to reflect on our discipleship & our
mission. God assures us of “holy joy” if
we are faithful. We are reminded that
“Revelation is a person: the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, Jesus
Christ, the definitive self -communication of the triune God.” (O Lord, I Seek Your Countenance,
p.205)
In the Gospel
Jesus sends 72 disciples to share the Good News that the kingdom/reign of God
is at hand. Their mission is to prepare
the way for the Lord. These three
mission stories may help us.
*My wife & I
took our twin granddaughters, Abigail & Beatrice to see the animated movie
“Toy Story 4.” In it a little girl named
Bonnie has to deal with a fundamental change in her life, she is going to
kindergarten.
The toy sheriff
[Woody] tries to help Bonnie adjust.
Pixar asked me not to give away the entire plot, hoping that you see the
movie. I can tell you this much Woody
succeeds.
*July 20, 2019
will be the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s successful moon landing
when Neil Armstrong said on the moon, “That’s one small step for
man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Sheriff Woody and
Neil Armstrong’s Missions were import, BUT we know the most important mission
of all time is Jesus Christ & His Kingdom.
In our reading
from Isaiah we heard rejoice, “…as a mother comforts her
child, so I will comfort you.” St. Paul tells us not to boast of anything
except the cross of Jesus Christ. We
should remember that any success we have is a gift from God to be used to build
up His Kingdom.
Appointing the 72
indicates that the whole world is to receive His message. The bottom line is Jesus “…
wants imitation not admiration.” (Rolheiser, Sunday Web Site)
He sends us to our family, to our parish, to our town & to
our place of work, to live His Gospel Message.
Our Discipleship and our Mission are one in same Follow Him, Follow
Jesus!
How are you Following Jesus?
May
God Be Praised!
