The Olympics and Life: Where We Find True Gold

Blog Post 8/08/2021 – The Olympics and Life: Where We Find True Gold

This year’s Olympics provided us with an excellent snapshot of the current state of our world.

First, the 2020 Summer Olympics are being held in the Summer of 2021 amid the backdrop of the surge of the Delta variant of COVID 19, so no spectators, and constant COVID testing of the participants.

Second, the families of the athletes watch on TV like the rest of us, and if their son, daughter, niece, nephew, etc, wins they get to Facetime or Zoom with their loved one to share in the glory of the moment.

Third, like most Olympics we witnessed the joy of winning an Olympic medal, as well as the agony of seeing one slip way by a split second.

Fourth, the heavy load carried and shared with us by Simone Biles and [then] her bronze medal victory to remind us that these are games.

The Olympics reflect life for each of us, ups, downs, triumphs, tragedies, yet reminding us life is to be lived for God.  God wants us to reflect His love and joy, tears, and smiles, His Cross and His Resurrection.

The true Olympic Gold Medal is the gift of the Holy Eucharist, Jesus takes us to Himself, and gives Himself to us, Gold in its’ most precious form.

God, our refuge, and hope, we turn to You during this COVID 19 Pandemic and plead for Your intercession.  In Your mercy and compassion, You carry the dead home and give us grace to comfort each other.  As the Pandemic persists, in its Delta variant form and we try to return to “normal” life, may that “normal” be filled with prayer and thanksgiving for You and for the many blessings You give us.  May we follow Your Light as we continue our earthly journey and prepare for the gift of eternal life.  Amen.          [Dcn. May God Be Praised.
