Day 7
Cultivating the Garden of the Soul [Wright. pp.62-64]. “A garden is meant to be beautiful and fruitful, filled with life and fragrance, but a garden must be maintained.” [Ibid., p.62]
In a little town outside of Dublin, Ireland, a man named O’Toole found a messy plot of land. He spent weeks cleaning out the debris, racking and fertilizing the soil. Then he planted flowers, carefully watered them. After a few months his garden was a thing of beauty.
One day as he was admiring his garden, Fr. O’Reilly walked past and said to him. What a fine garden you & the Lord have made. O’Toole said Father you should have seen it when the Lord had it by Himself!
The Lord doesn’t make messes, but He helps clean them up after we make them. You and I are called by Jesus – to listen to HIS WORD and allow it to guide our lives. God wants us to find, clean, cultivate and maintain the garden, the garden of our soul. We do that through God’s grace, in particular the graces offered in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
