Chapter 2 “God Is Acting Today”
God is good and gracious, but also, mysterious and manifest.
“Ultimately the question is always: does God intervene in the course of world affairs? Dose God even want to? Is that something worthy of God? Can such a thing be, in a world that is God’s creation and has its own integrity? [p. 31]
“… the question of God’s power in history-affects not only the question of petitionary prayer; it touches prayers of praise and thanksgiving …. What invites praise and thanksgiving in the Bible is above all God’s deeds in history.” [pp 31,32]
“Both the Old and the New Testaments tell us in many places that God is active in everything, that God guides history and even intervenes when Israel calls out to Him.” [p.32]
“But biblical faith in God’s power in history achieves its absolute culmination in the New Testament confession ‘God raised Jesus from the dead,’ because God’s raising of Jesus indeed means new creation beyond our earthly world …. God transforms history that has happened and is happening into ultimate meaning.” [p.33]
“God effects all things everywhere, and the prayers of the People of God praise not only God’s actions in history but also God’s working in the universe.” [p.40]
For us God’s mystery is to be lived as disciples of Jesus Christ, the Son Who shows us the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Saint Joseph, pray for us.
Saint Andre Bessette, intercede for us.
May God Be Praised!
