Blog Post 10-05-2024 Homily Offered at OLPH for Salesian Saturday

This morning, in our first reading we heard from the Book of Job, Job offers us insight in human suffering.

Job asked Why?

We ask Why?

God answered Job - TRUST Me, Job.

Human suffering is one of the most perplexing [in not the most perplexing] human problem.  I can only offer you this story to help us understanding human suffering.

In the ancient world rabbis usually gather students 4 or 5 and took them outside of their town where the rabbis taught them.  While the rabbi was teaching his students, they looked down on their village, they saw foreign troops invade.  They heard the screaming, heard yelling and saw the fires.

Finally, the rabbi looked up to heaven and screamed, “If only I were God!”  One of his students asked him, “What would you do differently if you were God.”  The rabbi answered, “I would do nothing differently, but I would understand!”

We don’t understand why there is pain and suffering in the world, but Jesus taught us what to do with our pain and suffering.  Offer it up to God, ask God to bless it and have good come from it.

The face of God shone on Job; may it shine on each one of us.

May God Be Praised.
