Chapter 5 “Should We Ask for Things in Prayer”
Pope Francis said, “We are always on a journey in life. Let us choose the path of God! We will discover that there are no unexpected events, no uphill path, and no night that cannot be faced with Jesus.”
“More and more Christians, including believers, are asking themselves: is there any sense in praying for things? … Ever since the Lisbon earthquake on November 1, 1775, and most certainly since the Shoah, prayers of perfection have been problematic, and with them belief in God – in a living God who acts in history …. It was not God who ignored Auschwitz. We Christians did it.” [pp.71-73]
“May we ask God for ‘anything’? …. “Trust in God is, in fact, the central subject of Jesus’ instruction.” [pp.77-78]
The Our Father “… asks for the coming of the reign of God and nothing else.” [p.82]
“The Our Father hews steadfastly to its single theme: the coming of the reign of God. In the second part of the prayer Jesus’ disciples ask that everything that make possible the coming of the reign of God may take place in their midst. If we follow the pattern of the Our Father it sems as if we may not ask for everything but only for the coming of god’s reign ….” [pp.83-83]
“The reign of God does not refer to a higher world; means this world in which we live…. the here and now.’ [p.88]
“Christian existence means unconditional adherence to Jesus. In him we have everything-and we have it infallibly.” [p.94]
